Mariana Rebola (1995) is a Portuguese artist living and working between Lisbon and London. Her practice combines distinct visual media — such as photography, video performance and printmaking — to express the cultural and emotional constraints of female adulthood. Through the use of appropriated imagery and self-representation, her work is imbued with metaphorical and unsettling undertones aiming to evoke an exploratory, primitive sense of bodily existence.
Mariana studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto (PT) and, shortly, at the Academy of Fine Arts of Prague (CZ). To combine her interest in visual arts with sociological aspects of culture, she completed a Master’s Degree in Audiovisual Arts - Photography at Luca School of Arts of Gent (BE), along with a degree in Arts, Culture and Society at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam (NL).
Her work has been displayed in international venues including Hisk, Tate Britain, Netwerk Museum, The Mark Rothko Art Center and The Biennale of Contemporary Art of Maia, and is held in multiple private collections. Professionally, Mariana is also the co-founder of the Portuguese art magazine ‘DOSE’ - a curatorial project on print, organising talks, exhibitions and studio visits in the emerging art scene in Portugal.
